Course Description
The BLS Instructor class is designed to train individuals who are already proficient in Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques to become certified instructors themselves. This course equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively teach BLS Provider courses to others.
Course Outline
- Curriculum Review: The course often begins with a comprehensive review of the BLS curriculum, including CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants, the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), airway management, and team dynamics in resuscitation scenarios.
- Teaching Strategies: Participants learn effective teaching strategies and instructional techniques tailored to adult learners. This includes how to facilitate discussions, demonstrate skills, provide feedback, and assess participants' proficiency.
- Lesson Planning: Participants learn how to develop lesson plans and create engaging presentations for BLS Provider courses. This involves structuring content logically, incorporating multimedia resources, and adapting materials to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Skill Practice and Evaluation: Participants have opportunities to practice teaching BLS skills under the guidance of experienced instructors. They receive feedback on their teaching techniques and are evaluated on their ability to effectively convey BLS concepts and demonstrate skills.
- Instructor Resources: Participants are introduced to instructor resources provided by organizations such as the American Heart Association (AHA) and Atlas.
Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the BLS Instructor class, participants are typically awarded certification as BLS Instructors. This certification allows them to teach BLS Provider courses to healthcare professionals, first responders, and other individuals seeking BLS training and any Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED courses.

Notes
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Have hair pulled up, if needed, so it does not interfere while practicing compressions. You will be expected to complete compressions with a manikin on the floor. The only exception is a medical condition preventing someone to get on the floor.Prerequisites
Before enrolling in a BLS Instructor class, participants need to possess a current BLS Provider certification and present a copy of the BLS Provider card to Instructor the day of the class.
Must purchase the BLS Instructor manuel with video (dvd, usb, or digital) prior to class at ShopCPR.heart.org
Participants should also have a solid understanding of BLS principles and techniques.
