  • Medical Emergencies: The course covers recognition and initial management of medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and allergic reactions.

  • Injury Emergencies: Techniques for managing injuries such as bleeding, burns, sprains, strains, and fractures will be taught, including bandaging and splinting.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid course completion card, valid for two years. This certification demonstrates proficiency in providing basic first aid according to current guidelines.

Course Objectives:

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies and injuries
  • Provide appropriate first aid care while waiting for medical professionals to arrive
  • Demonstrate effective communication and coordination in emergency situations
  • Use available resources, including first aid kits, to provide necessary care

Notes

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Have hair pulled up so it does not interfere while practicing compressions. You will be expected to complete compressions with a manikin on the floor. The only exception is a medical condition preventing someone to get on the floor. If you have any questions, please contact Katrina Veal at klveal@oftc.edu
