Course Description

Driver's education behind the wheel is a critical component of learning to drive safely and confidently.

To Enroll:

  1. Application – Apply Now
  2. Create Student Account
  3. Answer the questions and upload the learner’s permit
  4. Add to cart the location, the number of hours you prefer to drive and make payment
  5. Once you have completed the process, email Katrina Veal at klveal@oftc.edu to schedule the driving session(s)

Course Outline

  • Instructor Guidance: Students are paired with certified driving instructors who provide one-on-one guidance. These instructors are experienced in teaching driving skills and ensuring safety.

  • Vehicle Familiarization: Initially, students become familiar with the vehicle they will be driving. This includes understanding the controls, dashboard indicators, mirrors, and seating adjustments for comfort and safety.

  • Basic Maneuvers: Beginners start with fundamental maneuvers such as starting and stopping the vehicle, turning, signaling, and changing lanes. Practicing these maneuvers helps build confidence and familiarity with basic vehicle handling.

  • Traffic Laws and Signs: Instructors educate students on traffic laws, road signs, and signals. Understanding these rules is crucial for safe driving and complying with legal requirements.

  • Parking Skills: Techniques for parallel parking, perpendicular parking, and parking on hills are taught. These skills are essential for navigating parking lots and urban areas safely.

  • Road Awareness and Hazard Response: Students learn to scan the road ahead for potential hazards, pedestrians, and other vehicles. They practice defensive driving techniques to anticipate and respond to unexpected situations.

  • Intersection Navigation: Negotiating intersections safely is a significant focus. This includes understanding right-of-way rules, making safe turns, and navigating traffic lights.

  • Freeway and Highway Driving: Once comfortable with local roads, students progress to driving on highways and freeways. They learn merging techniques, maintaining safe following distances, and handling higher speeds.

  • Emergency Procedures: Instructors teach students how to respond to emergencies such as brake failure, tire blowouts, and adverse weather conditions. This includes knowing how to safely pull over and call for assistance if needed.

  • Practice and Evaluation: Throughout the training, students practice these skills under various conditions and receive feedback from instructors. This iterative process helps improve driving proficiency and prepares students for the final driving test.

Prerequisites

Must process an active Learner's Permit from the DMV office. Student will use the OFTC Driver's Education car with a certified Driver's Education Instructor.
